Apple Opens Up iPhone to Third-Party App Stores and Browsers in EU with iOS 17.4

Apple has released iOS 17.4, bringing significant changes for iPhone users in the European Union (EU). This update complies with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), allowing more freedom in app stores and web browsing.

Key Changes for EU Users:

·         Sideloading Apps: iPhone users in the EU can now download apps from third-party app stores, not just the official App Store.

·         Alternative Browsers: Users can choose browsers powered by engines other than Apple's WebKit, opening up options beyond Safari.

·         Default Browser Choice: A new screen lets users pick their preferred default browser upon first launching Safari in iOS 17.4.

Security Concerns and Safeguards:

Apple expresses concerns about potential security risks associated with these changes, including malware and scams. To mitigate these risks, iOS 17.4 introduces:

·         Notarization: A new system for authorizing app marketplaces, aiming to reduce risks associated with third-party app distribution.

·         App Tracking Transparency: Retained for apps from alternative stores, allowing users to control data tracking.

Other Features in iOS 17.4:

·         Music Recognition: Adds identified songs to Apple Music playlists and libraries.

·         Siri Announcements: Siri can now announce incoming messages in supported languages.

·         Enhanced Stolen Device Protection: Offers increased security options across locations.

·         Detailed Battery Health: Provides battery cycle count, manufacturing date, and first use date (iPhone 15 and 15 Pro only).

·         Improved Call Identification: Displays business names, logos, and departments (when available).

·         Business Updates in Messages: Allows trusted businesses to send updates on orders, flights, and other transactions.

·         Apple Cash Virtual Cards: Enables payments at non-Apple Pay merchants using virtual card numbers from Wallet or Safari AutoFill.

·         Bug Fixes: Addresses issues with contact pictures in Find My and phone number changes in Dual SIM usage.

Sideloading Limitations:

While sideloading offers more app choices in the EU, it comes with limitations:

·         In-app purchases won't be tracked within the App Store.

·         Apple won't offer refunds for purchases made outside the App Store.

·         Family Sharing and Ask to Buy won't work with sideloaded apps.

iOS 17.4 is available now for download on compatible iPhones (iPhone XR/Xs or newer).
